The new projects for the year 2024-2025 are:
Nuhanovich Foundation (in English): The project assesses the links between the Netherlands and international crimes occurring in the context of armed conflicts in Yemen, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Somalia, and Sudan. The project also includes investigating the needs of refugees from the four conflicts in the Netherlands. It covers several socio-legal disciplines: international criminal law; international human rights law; Dutch law; conflict studies; political economy and international relations.Â
Stichting Straatconsulaat (in Dutch): treatment of homelessness in the Netherlands: when do (municipal) regulations criminalise homelessness? For example, hos is the concept of 'nuisance' interpreted, what happens with sanctions and what about access to court/remedies and right to legal assistance for persons in the situation of homelessness? The research also includes interviews with municipal workers and possibly cooperation with students from the Faculty of Management Studies.
Stichting UAF (University Assistance Fund) (in English or Dutch): Research into the consequences of the new Integration Law 2021 and its implementation by municipalities on asylum seekers who wish to access higher education or to exercise certain professions in the Netherlands. The research includes interviews with UAF clients, UAF employees, other NGO staff and language teachers.
International Commission of Jurists (in English and possibly partly in Dutch): Research on the EU and ECtHR standards on the procedural rights of children in criminal proceedings to support comparative research of ICJ on this topic.
ASKV Steenpunt Vlichtelingen (in Dutch): What are the powers of the Dienst van Terugkeer en Vertrek (DT&V) with regard to foreigners during the procedure of forced removal, what is the legal basis for these powers in national law, and how can the exercise of these powers be tested by courts or other authorities, including against articles 3, 5 and 8 ECHR. The research includes a case file study of ASKV clients, interviews with ASKV employees and possibly cooperation with students from the Social Geography department, Faculty of Management Studies.
PILP (in Dutch or English): Research into algorithmic decision-making by Dutch banks (for instance when making decisions on loans or when exercising additional checks of transactions) and its compatibility with the right to non-discrimination and GDPR.
Fair Trials International (in English and possibly partly in Dutch): Comparative research into compensation schemes and other remedies for illegal pre-trial detention in several EU jurisdictions. Possibly cooperation with students from Faculty of Management studies to research economic & social costs of pre-trial detention in several EU jurisdictions.
Fair Trials International (in English and possibly partly in Dutch): Comparative research into standards to ensure quality of translations and interpretation in criminal proceedings (requirements for translators and interpreters, training, quality assurance...) in several EU jurisdictions. Possibly cooperation with students from the Faculty of Arts to develop a guide of good practices for translation and interpretation in criminal proceedings.
